  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Nothing short of incredible, that’s exactly how I would describe the entire day at Marine Dynamics! The morning started off early with us having to collect a dead Great White Shark off of Dyer Island, this made for some very labour intensive efforts from some of our crew members. I took my leave (just before the hard work started :) ) in order to collect our clients for our shark trip that was scheduled for that very afternoon! After briefing the clients on what to expect on the water I was pleased to be able to show them the remains of the shark in the harbour! Believe me, after today’s shark activity they all prefer to see this amazing animal alive and free rather than dead. I took some pictures of the deceased shark, however I have handed it over to one of my colleagues who will be making a full press release in the near future! So watch this space...

Today was definitely the right day for you to have packed in your winter jacket and fortunately enough we had jackets ready for all our guests! The start of our trip took us past Geyser Rock and Dyer Island for some seal viewing; it was here where we got more viewing than we had bargained for! It was truly a sad sight to have seen a Great White Shark dead on the rocks of Dyer Island. The cause of death is as of yet unknown and we are currently in the process of identifying the individual. The trip did carry on to what I think was a spectacular day! We had loads of sharks and the sighting of a massive female which was not only 4 meters in length but had massive girth. I like to refer to her as “The Bus”! What a tremendous day...

Shark armor... what is special about shark skin?

Have you ever pet a shark (not that we condone shark petting!)?  Shark skin is smooth if you rub them from head to tail, but rough if you go tail to head.  This is because shark skin is actually teeth and this shark blog explains all about it...

Even though the water temperature has dropped about two degrees over the last couple of days, the fact that the sun was out in full force made up for it all! We were once again the only boat out on the water today which meant that we had all the sharks in the area all to ourselves! The conditions on the water were very pleasant with great weather for working on ones tan, not that I need any more tanning :)! Our sharks arrived in a matter of seconds and the first bunch were all massive females around the 4 meter mark! Great to start off big and maintain it throughout the trip! We were also lucky to conclude the trip with a terrific sighting of a Southern Right Whale on the horizon! Exceptional day...

We were the only shark cage diving company out on the water today, due to the fact that our boat Slash Fin can cope very well with the bigger weather conditions. The conditions at sea were actually quite pleasant and not at all what they predicted on the forecast! We were also very fortunate that the spot we chose today had three sharks already on site when we arrived! I am also so glad that the clients who had dire fears of great whites were converted to the light! They are beautiful animals which deserve our respect and not our fears. We were also treated to a spectacular sight today; a Cape Gannet plunged into the water just a meter from our boat. It barely missed one of our crew members heads as it was chasing after its prey. These birds are remarkable in the fact that they can hit the water at speeds of over a 100 km/h! What a treat to be able to see it in action...

Today we had predominently male sharks - perhaps they knew it was fathers day! Due to a North westerly wind picking up we were limited as to where we could dive , so we setlled on anchor in lthe lee of Dyer island just outside the mouth of Shark Alley. It seems that some of the sharks we have been working with on the adjacent side of the island days before, made the same decision.. much to our delight!
