  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Today we truly had 4 seasons in one day and what a day it was, packed full of entertainment and adventure. I only now realised that today was Friday the 13th and I am happy that ‘JASON’ was nowhere to be seen! As we were leaving the harbour we had some cold conditions and icy winds followed by a very brief hail storm hahaha, that really made things interesting. After the hail we were pleasantly surprised by the sunny conditions timed to perfection to start our dive. The sharks were very active and kept making passes by the cage, giving everyone a great view. Mr Ward who was joining us for the third straight day on the boat told me that he was happy with all of the trips and I believe he had enough pictures and memories to last him a lifetime. Take care Garry! The sharks remain amazing, but winter has definitely arrived. Please do remember to pack warm clothes, for after your dive! Great day...

Once again we encountered some swelly conditions when making our way out towards Shark Alley, but fortunately the channel provided us the perfect venue for our shark cage diving. We had zero waiting time and our very first shark was the biggest one of the day, a behemoth 4.3 meter individual. It made several passes in the beginning and returned again later for a second and third look at the cage! The seals on Geyser Rock were being particularly noisy today. It would seem that they were not being very appreciative of the fact that we were getting along so well with their enemy! All and all it was a fantastic trip; it was unfortunate that our first group of clients did not get to see the massive pod of bottlenose dolphins which we sighted on our second trip! Sorry guys, this at least gives you an excuse to come visit us again! See you soon...

Today was the first time that we were able to go out to sea in the past few days, on account of a bad weather front moving past! We had some wet and windy days, but I am happy to report that the sun was out in full force once again. It definitely was not a flat sea day, but our boat was purposely built for conditions like today and even though we were the only boat on the water, we had an amazing time! Upon our arrival in Shark Alley, Zane was the first one to spot a shark just off the bow of the boat. As soon as the cage was tide onto the boat we started to put our first divers into the water. Our third shark was massive at around 4.3 meters in length; it was unfortunate that this shark did not stick around though! We also had “Nemo” pay as a visit, he looks very well considering he is missing his right pectoral fin as well as the top of his dorsal! Just to put the final cherry on the trip, we hosted a very brief foam party which you can see in the photos. All in a day at Marine Dynamics! We go above and beyond to keep you happy :)...

Our research team spent the whole day of yesterday out at sea, in order to find “Slash Fin” and possibly tag him! That’s why I find it very ironic that our 7th shark to arrive at the boat today, after 45 minutes, was none other than the shark himself! It was great that this shark made several passes by the cage on three separate occasions and not just once off like usual. We also had two other sharks that were over the 4 meter mark; really big sharks today! The smaller sharks arrived later on in the trip, of which the smallest one was around 2.9 meters. The guys from Denmark came up with the expression “SICK”, which seemed to become the phrase of the day for every shark sighting! Nice one guys, hilarious trip...

We were forced to launch our boat in the afternoon rather than the morning today; this was due to the low tide forcing us to do so. Nevertheless the sharks were waiting for us when we arrived and the first shark was a massive 4.1 meter male shark, not a bad way to start the trip:)! The weather has been a bit cloudy the last couple of days, hence the reason we all have gained a deeper appreciation for sunny days like today. It was an awesome family day on the boat, with one family being the most people from one family that I have had on board! 14 people ranging from very young towards not so young, it is great to see that shark cage diving has become an experience for the entire family. When you kids grow up, you can bring your children to Marine Dynamics :)...

Even though it wasn’t a flat day on the sea, we still had some awesome sunny conditions! The voyage towards our dive sight and back was very entertaining for most of the guests on board, however some did mention that their bums were not equipped to handle all of the bumps :)! The dive site itself offered the perfect protection from the swell and wind conditions, well done to the crew! It was great that the waiting time was virtually zero until the sharks arrived; our visibility today was very variable. At times we had visibility all the way down to the sea bed (5 meters) and other times it turned more murky, unfortunately there are always factors beyond our control. The sharks were giving some lovely passes by the cage, but they were reluctant to come up and pose for my camera today, hence the limited number of shark pics today! I’ll get you next time sharkies...PS. the skate on the last pic was released unharmed.
