  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

We had a great bunch of people on the boat today, both young and not so young ;)! The sharks were great in their prompt arrival on the scene and the initial sharks were quite large too! They ranged in size from 3.8 – 4 meters and were initially a bit far away, but they soon came in for a closer inspection! We were very lucky to have seen two Pintado Petrels on the water today, these birds are also known as the Cape Petrel. Unfortunately they were a bit far away and I was unable to get a nice photo, perhaps next time! A great day on the water...

Marine Dynamics was the only boat on the water today which meant we had all the sharks, in Shark Alley, to ourselves. As my father always says; “I’m not greedy, but I want a lot:) !” That applies to sharks as well!  We were good to go, our first sharks eagerly awaiting us in the water. The sharks were giving some nice passes and we had some massive ones that were around the 4.3 meter mark. The sharks were a bit reluctant to breach the surface water for nice above water photos, but the sightings in the cage were nice and up close. Perhaps they will be more jumpy tomorrow...

Today we had an amazing trip despite the howling cold North Westerly wind blowing. In total we observed 12 white sharks, including one satellite tagged male shark 'Andre'. One enormous female arrived towards the end of our dives, I estimated her length 4.8-5m,she made the cage look small, so we thought it appropriate to name her the 'Tank-ess'.

Another remarkable winter trip! On arrival at Dyer Island, we got our first shark sighting immiediately and the action just continued. It seems many of the sharks were re sighted from the day before,  on the West side of the island. We saw 14 sharks in total, ranging in size from 3 to 4.5 meters, predominently males.

We could not have asked for a better start to our trip today than the sighting of a Southern Right Whale on route to our dive sight! These are incredible animals, not only for their size but also for their relaxed way of doing things. We could all learn something from how these animals simply just enjoy life! Our sister company, “Dyer Island Cruises”, also had a whale watching trip scheduled with some great sightings. We decided to leave the whales behind and carry on towards our dive sight, where we had action awaiting us! Our second shark was also our biggest one at 4 meters in length and also stayed with the boat for some time! A really great trip with some awesome sightings! Keep it up sharkies...

The weather was significantly warmer today than yesterday; however the water temp has gone done ever so slightly! It’s great that there was very little waiting time needed before the sharks started to arrive on the scene. We didn’t have the massive sharks around the cage today, but we did have some great personalities amongst the 3.7 meter ones. They kept giving some close passes and some nice open jaw photo opportunities. Conditions were very nice at sea, however some people did end up feeling a bit unwell, but well done in making it through it guys! Never the less everyone still got to see a Great white up close and in action! Great stuff guys...
