  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

We didn't have a record number of sharks today, but you would not have noticed any difference. The sharks we had just kept circling the boat for the entire duration of the trip...

Despite the light rains which we had to endure at the start of our trip, the weather wasn’t too bad at all. The seas were calm and the winds were very mild, great conditions for a shark dive. Some of our younger divers were a bit reluctant at first to dive with such large animals, but I am very glad to say that our youngest client, Holly, did make it into the cage eventually! Well done to her and to all others who conquered their fears. “Prop scar shark” made an appearance at the very end when we were hoisting the cage out of the water. We had three sharks that were around the 4 meter mark and the fact that the visibility was good made it even better. An awesome day...

Another stunning inshore trip with plenty of sharks. Despite the wind and rain we had an amazing trip with exceptional visibility for the inshore area.

Daily trip 20 September 2012

It was an extremely diverse day, with heaps of different wildlife to be seen! The start to our day was early in order to avoid the afternoon’s weather that was scheduled to come in and the wind definitely started to howl later on in the trip. The sharks were a bit stubborn today and kept us waiting for quite some time; this was however not a problem. We had an amazing bunch of people on board and the weather was great, it seemed to be a social gathering of a bunch of mates. The sharks did arrive eventually and everyone had their turn in the cage. Even our volunteers braved the cold waters as a final good bye just before they embarked on their future endeavours. The hagfish today certainly scared people more than the sharks did, that was hilarious, thanks for the great laughs guys! Finally to end things off, we stumbled upon a ‘bait ball’ of fish which were being harassed by gulls from above- and snoek from below water. An amazing spectacle...

What a day to see some awesome sharks with some truly jaw dropping moments, for both the sharks and the clients as the pictures illustrate! We were fortunate to have a Southern Right Whale sighting with her calf, to see such a massive animal with its young is truly a heart stopping moment! A hagfish sighting in front of the cage gave us the opportunity to get the guys in the cage. They would have to believe us if we said it was a “Deadly Sea Snake”, which never gets old. Our prop scar shark is still keeping the waters seal populations down and seems to be recovering quite well! A great day...

Daily trip 16th September 2012

One of the all-time great days in Joubertsdam; stunning and massive white sharks, flat calm seas, not a cloud in the sky and mating Southern Right Whales. Our first trip launched from Gansbaai harbour on account of the tide and the result was whale sightings in the first few seconds of the trip – first breaching in the distance and then a mating group close to the kelp. As we arrived on anchor we were greeted with 3 massive sharks between 4.5 and 5 m in length, they included ‘Evil Fin’ and the legendary Darwin; this shark has been sighted every September in Joubertsdam for the past 6 years and today was our first sighting of her this year. She’s grown massive and is very close to ‘Evil fin’ in size.

On our second trip we met what could very well become a new legend ‘Slashfin II’ like the original Slashfin the fin of this shark has been torn in 3 places and will very likely heal in a similar way to the large male who patrols Dyer Island each year. This shark is very close to 5 m in length and was in unbelievable form. Lunging and breaching at the bait time after time giving almost all of our cage divers up close looks at her fresh bite wounds. They will heal and we will be able to keep a keen eye out for this shark for years to come.
