  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

The very first thing we spotted on our way out to our dive site was a Southern Right Whale, now if that’s not how you start your day then I don’t know how else :)! This adult was very close to the boat and gave us a nice steady passing by, enough time for everyone to grab at least one photo opportunity! Thereafter onwards to our shark dive! We had a large number of sharks on both our trips; however it was not the numbers that need to be mentioned but rather the individuals. We had a 3.7 meter male shark that just kept passing really close to the cage and kept starring at the divers! Nerve racking for some and amazing for others! A really nice shark...

What a terrific weather day to have after a weekend like the one that just past! We had some very wet and windy days over the weekend and it was such a pleasure to host two trips in weather conditions like today! My tan is looking pretty good once again :)! We had some nice sized sharks on our first trip with one having some heavy scaring on his dorsal as well as to his body! We have seen this shark on several occasions, but not for a while! We had him on our second trip also and boy was he active! The one shark that was keeping our bait handlers very vigilant must have been the satellite tagged shark of today! This shark was flying all over the place like a bundle of energy! Hope I see You tomorrow again...

Our trip had an early start to it in order to ensure that we had enough time back before the wind started to pick up! I love the choppy seas because it seems the sharks are just more prone to jump in these conditions! They were flying all over the place! We had a few Kelp gulls that were very fortunate not to get chomped, by the sharks, after they were coming dangerously close to the bait line! After a great spectacle of shark viewing we were treated to a roller coaster ride by our skipper! Very entertaining for most on board however slightly nauseating for others! A great combination of sharks and thrills today...

We had a lovely early start to today’s trip! The reason for the early morning is not only because we love to start things on a good note, but because we are expecting a cold front to move in later today! I think initially the sharks were a bit slow a first but they definitely got a boost of energy later on as you can see in the photos! We had several sharks around the 4 meter margin; however there was the one large female that just kept giving us some tremendous poses! A hagfish did offer some entertainment for those on the boat and left some nervous faces on those in the cage, even though I told them it was harmless. At the end of our trip one could feel the chill in the air and the wind starting to pick up. Perfect timing to end our day...

What a day! We witnessed two or three full breaches on the decoy, that was truly incredible! Our first trip had a wonderful family from Spain and they enjoyed the dive a lot! Both young and not so young were having a good time! We had one shark on our second trip with some massive scaring from an apparent bite wound! I was very fortunate to have captured it on a photo, have a look for yourself! It was just a tremendous day for photos...

Two very successful trips today, both with an abundance of sharks! Even though we had a chilly wind out on the water, it was bearable due to the spaciousness of the boat and the fact that we have large tarps which can be dropped down to offer protection from the elements. An added bonus of seeing a Southern Right Whale on our way toward Shark Alley was great! Our second trip had the bonus of seeing a large group of penguins making their way towards Dyer Island, most likely to go tuck themselves in for the night! The trips had several sharks leaping for joy and I was happy to have my camera ready! Let’s see what tomorrow has in store...
