  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Slashfin launched this morning from Kleinbaai harbour with a beautiful sunrise coming up from behind the mountains. We were hopeful that after not seeing any sharks yesterday, that we would get to see some today. While this rang true for some, it unfortunately didn’t for others. Our first trip spotted a small pod of bottlenose dolphins moving through the surf line while we waited. This trip was lucky and after about an hour’s wait, we had a stunning 4.3 meter male white shark approaching the boat. He gave some beautiful passes, very close to the cage. At one point he snuck up on our bait handler and tried to snag some fish heads. When he did this, he turned his white belly towards our divers, showing off two very large claspers! There was no denying that our visitor was a male! He eventually released the bait and there were some very loud cheers coming from the cage. What lucky divers!!

Our second trip of the day launched with high hopes that this male would stick around. While the wait began shark facts, questions, and jokes were passed around. After waiting a couple of hours, it seemed as though the luck had run out and our white shark wasn’t coming back for another visit. We headed out to shark alley and spent some time with our colony of approximately 60,000 cape fur seals. These marine mammals are known for being agile in the water, and quite cute when they look up at you with their large eyes. While they weren’t the white sharks that we were hoping to see, seeing them was a nice way to end our day.
