  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

1 shark, 2 sharks, 3 sharks, 4! Could we possibly ask for anything more? How about a stunning sunrise to begin the day! As Slashfin launched this morning, we were greeted by mother nature with a breath-taking sunrise that made the skies look like they were glowing with fire. Not only this, but we had our first visitor within 15 minutes of anchoring! It was a male white shark approximately 2.5 meters long that has been nicknamed “Clampo” due to that fact that his dorsal fin looks a lot like Clampy’s. It didn’t take long before we had another white shark, this time a female, a bit larger in size, with 3 scars along the right side of her body. She was soon followed by a 2.8 meter male white shark with a black scar/freckle on his right side just above his pectoral fin. We were so happy to have multiple sharks around, but the excitement rose even more so when the largest white shark appeared, at 3.7 meters long. If the sight alone of this beauty wasn’t thrilling enough, watching it sneak up from beneath the cage to try to get Sally the seal decoy was jaw dropping. We ended our trip with a visit to shark alley to see one of the white shark’s favourite prey, our colony of 60,000 cape fur seals. These marine mammals provide the sharks with a hearty meal, however it does take quite a few seals to make a large white shark full. During a previous dissection of a deceased white shark quite a few years back, we found 6 seals inside of the sharks belly! After some great sightings of sharks and seals, we headed back in to Kleinbaai harbour to warm up with some nice hot vegetable soup and homemade bread. What a fin-tastic way to start the day!!
