  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Conditions: Another stunning day with sunshine, almost no breeze, and minimal swell.

After two days with white sharks spotted in our bay, we had our fingers crossed that the third day would be the charm. While it took a bit of time and patience (and an anchor change) we did get to see one of our beautiful white sharks today. It was a young shark, approximately 2.5 meters long, with a white scar on the top of its head and some small scars along its left side. It was very quick, making numerous attempts at both the seal decoy and bait line. It seemed to favour Sally the seal decoy, as it would disappear then try to sneak up beneath her, occasionally lunging halfway out of the water with Sally flying off of the tip of its snout. All of our divers got to see this gorgeous, agile white shark while in the cage and on the boat, with some lucky divers getting an amazingly close pass as the shark actually inched closer to the cage so that it could rub its snout along it. It moved its head up and down and it was almost as if the shark had an itch that it was trying to scratch on the cage. There was also a humback dolphin spotted in the distance along the surfline, most likely hunting some fish, and a box jelly floated by the cage. After some great sightings, the shark activity grew quiet, so we handed out some hot chocolates and teas, packed up our things, and headed back to the harbour. With a new shark spotted each day this week, we’re excited to see who tomorrow brings!
